Mitch arrived in D.C. in 2018 as City Paper’s Loose Lips reporter, and he became managing editor in September 2021. As LL, he focused on the squabbles, oopsies, and blunders that sustain D.C. politics. He’s also reported and edited stories on criminal justice, policing, housing, and government spending. In 2023, he launched City Paper’s Inside Voices column that highlights the perspectives and writings of incarcerated people and returned citizens. He is originally from St. Louis, where the pizza and bagels are much better.

Cops on Trial: D.C. Police Disciplinary Hearing for October
One D.C. police officer is scheduled for a disciplinary hearing this month. Officer H. Thomas is accused of repeatedly leaving his duty assignment and engaging in “inappropriate conduct,” according to the monthly schedule for adverse action hearings posted online. During a background briefing with reporters last week, a high-ranking D.C. police official mixed up the names of the two officers who fired their weapons at Justin Robinson. The official initially and incorrectly identified Officer Bryan Gilchrist as “officer 1” in the department’s community briefing video. A Man Died in the DC Jail, the Sixth In-Custody Death in 2024
Benjamin Robertson died inside the DC Jail over the weekend. He was found unresponsive just after 5:45 a.m. on Sept. 15 in the gym area of his unit in the Central Detention Facility, according to an announcement from the Department of Corrections.
