Decades before Kiefer Sutherland or Bruce Willis joined the War on Terror in 24 or Die Hard, Walter Matthau—yes, Walter Matthau—stood up to smooth-talking New York subwayjacker Robert Shaw in 1974’s The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. The seminal hostage thriller gets a humorous live-performance update when area DJ and blogger Jason Linkins and friends present The Taking of Orange Line 1-2-3 as part of the first edition of the F.W. Thomas Performances, a monthly literary variety show organized and hosted by local journalist Adam Mazmanian (a Washington City Paper contributing writer). The show includes readings by local novelist Sarah Grace McCandless, Skeleton Kids creator Thomas M. Lowery, and journalist Jeff Bagato reporting on a District man who claims to have the world’s largest private collection of Bettie Page pinups. Join the circus at 7:30 p.m. at the Warehouse Theater & Cafe, 1021 7th St. NW. $3. (202) 783-3933. (Chris Klimek)
